In the school summer holiday period, accommodation providers experienced mixed levels of performance. Four in ten sites reported an increase in visitor numbers vs. the same period in 2016, lower than the year-to-date figure and the lowest level of growth since April 2016. Meanwhile, 23% reported a reduction of visitors, slightly higher than the corresponding year-to-date number. The performance of self-catering accommodation has heavily contributed to the lower levels of growth over the summer holiday period, with only 22% reporting an increase of visitors

In terms of increased visitation, hotels continue to be the strongest performing type of accommodation. However, satisfaction scores do not reflect this, with only half (51%) of hotels purporting to be ‘very satisfied’ with their business performance during the summer holiday period, the lowest score of any accommodation type.
Looking ahead until the end of October, advance booking levels for accommodation providers as a whole remain relatively robust. Almost seven in ten sites described bookings as at least ‘good’, with just 5% judging them as ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ (the same levels as seen in the previous two waves of research).
